Post No. 89

May 5, 2012

I had a *vague* idea who Carl Sagan was *ahem* but I never realized how big his cult status is in the United States of America. Mind-boggling.

Anyway.

I came across many things he’s supposed to have said. In a way it’s not really important whether or not he actually said them. The really important thing is that these “quotes” need to appear with an imprimatur from Carl Sagan – they need to be seen as real science, uttered by A Great Scientist (NB Nobody’s belittling Sagan’s credentials here, OK?)

The latest such attributed bon mot I came across was

We live in a society exquisitely dependent on science and technology, in which hardly anyone knows anything about science and technology

I had to giggle.

Then it crossed my mind to replace a few words. We live in a society that passionately hates God, in which hardly anyone knows anything about God. It works.

When you combine the two you get something like:

We live in a society that passionately hates God – because we think he has been superseded by science and technology – in which hardly anyone knows anything about God, science and technology.

Hmmmm. It still works.

Time for another mug of coffee.

Toodle-oo.
